Self-Love Is Just The Beginning
This is something that has been on my heart for a while now and I finally feel led to share it. Self-love is talked about everywhere these days - on social media, in the wellness space, even on my own blog. I absolutely agree that self-love is important; however, it is only one piece of the puzzle…Yes, loving oneself will build a more positive, more confident you, but ultimately the practice of self-love should compel us to love others. Without that second step, we can too easily draw inward and miss a bigger purpose. We can’t stop at selfish - we must keep moving till we reach self-less. When we view ourselves the way God views us, we are empowered to view others in the same light - one that leaves judgement at the door and loves unconditionally. Self-love is not meant to end with you…it is meant to end with WE. It is confidence in one’s worth. It is boldness to act.
The love God wants us to experience is an unconditional love called “Agape.” This is a love as humans we can’t truly understand, because it is not part of our Earthly selves. The only way to experience it fully is through knowing God. Agape love fills us up more than any other love can. It is not based on emotions or desires and is therefore unchanging. Regardless of our actions, God’s love for us will remain constant. He will love you and I forever, completely the same. This is the love he wants us to experience for ourselves and gift to others.
So yes, self-love is fabulous and necessary for us to recognize our worth in God’s eyes. BUT, self-love and self-care without a desire to love others is incomplete. Fill yourself up, but don’t cut yourself short and stop halfway. Go out and love others as well. Learning to truly love can only be found in God - start there. His love for us never changes and never falters. Learn to give this type of love to others.
