Celebrating the journey is just as important as the goal
I think it is wonderful to set goals and try your hardest to achieve them. I mean, I set goals every day! But I believe we can get too focused on achieving (or not achieving) our main goal that we overlook the tiny successes along the way.
Success can motivate and encourage. It can bring a smile to a frown and turn a rough day into a great one. It can also blind us to steps in journey to get there. Recently, I noticed that I was getting too caught up in my main objective that I wasn’t recognizing the small victories along the way. I can be too concerned about my ultimate goal that I disregard each step that gets me to that goal.
I decided to change my outlook. I began tracking my journey and writing down any moment I hit a new victory. It could be as little as losing a single pound, or adding an extra burpee, or sheading 10 seconds off a mile time. Celebrating the small successes keeps me motivated to continue down the path to my larger goal. It brings me joy more frequently and reinvigorated my passion to hit my objective.
Once I began acknowledging the small steps in my journey, I became grateful for the hours and effort spent. I began looking forward to training harder, to pushing myself to new heights, to sweating an extra minute. Praising each step made me more aware of my progress and proud of myself for sticking with it. Changing my perspective changed the way I viewed my goals.
The beauty is in the journey just as much as the destination.
The next time you set a goal, don't forget to celebrate the small success along the way. Take time to recognize the progress you make (however small) and praise yourself for it. Be positive and treat yourself with respect. You will learn to love the journey just as much as you love the end result.
